Welcome to the Kleber & Associates blog! Here’s the latest on Homes of the Future Tour
And now for something completely different. Forget sustainability and green living, this futuristic house in Poland is all about safety.
The house is built as a concrete fortress. Standing two stories high, with a swimming pool, balconies, and modern design, the house provides a comfortable place to live with a beautiful view. But when safety is in question, the house literally seals up tight. Huge concrete slabs fold up to cover the windows and all sides of the house. The only entrance is on the second story, accessible only by a rising drawbridge. Once closed up, the home is a solid block of concrete, impenetrable to anyone who might be a threat.
The builders of the home, KWKPromes, said, “the client’s top priority was to gain a feeling of maximum security in their future house, which determined the building’s outlook and performance.” And while a lot of mechanical elements went into the home, KWKPromes says the design still allows for energy efficiency. The wide glazings behind the movable walls acquire solar energy during the winter and block solar energy during the summer. Thick concrete walls help insulate the home at night and efficiently use the energy it gained during the day. The house also uses a heat pump, solar system and heat recovery ventilation system to make the house an “intelligent passive building.”
Of course we have to ask – what threat could warrant such elaborate precautionary measures? Why zombies of course! The web has been abuzz lately touting this house as the ultimate zombie-proof fortress. But even if a zombie apocalypse isn’t on your radar… you have to admit this house is pretty cool and very futuristic.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at some future-focused homes. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out the previous posts in my Homes of the Future tour. If you know of other structures that are on the cutting edge of home building – let me know! I’d love to hear about them.
